Annelie's Birth Story
It was confirmed Monday afternoon, April 6, that Kate would indeed be pregnant forever because the baby was safe and happy as could be in her belly.

With an overwhelming desire to meet their baby, Sean started pulling out all the stops that evening. First, he forced Kate to get off her sorry butt and dance a bit to try and get that baby moving. Next, he ordered every labor inducing myth for dinner. Kate chowed down on salad with balsamic vinaigrette (thanks, Cindy), eggplant parmesan (thanks, strangers) and spicy buffalo chicken pizza (thanks, Melissa). An hour later she went into labor. Of course, this was nothing new as Kate had “gone into labor” each of the last several nights, only to have the contractions fade away by daylight. By midnight, however, she could tell the pattern on this evening was different … now, how to convince Sean that the game had truly begun? While Sean attempted to catch a few hours rest before either going to work or going to the hospital, Kate managed to drag a yoga ball, a dining chair, a recliner and various accoutrements into the bedroom to labor near Sean. After about an hour, Sean was roused by his restless wife with the “you got me into this mess …” line and the fun began. By morning, Kate had been in labor ten hours and called her midwife to say they were on their way.

Settled in at the hospital Tuesday morning, the plan soon changed. Meconium in the water meant that Kate had to be monitored closely and was pretty much restricted to the bed. So much for the myriad ideas and bag of goodies Kate had brought to ease the pain of labor; it was all useless except for the iPod, which played a peaceful and powerful blend of Cat Stevens tunes for most of the day. After about seven more hours of labor, increasing in intensity and pace, Kate cried “uncle” or rather “epidural.” Two epidurals and an hour later, Kate was finally at peace! In fact, she was so at peace, that she and Sean were off to la la land. They napped for precisely the duration of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Moondance albums (note: Sean proposed during the song Moondance at a Van concert), awaking to find that the baby was ready to be delivered! The nurses prepared the room, the tunes were changed, Kate pushed for 15 minutes and Annelie flew into the world at 6:14 p.m.!

Wake of the flood, laughing water, forty-nine, Get out the pans, don't just stand there dreamin' Get out of the way, get out of the way,

Here comes sunshine, here comes sunshine.

-- Grateful Dead (Annelie’s arrival song)

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world, the heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own. Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings, But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenin's and songs of it's own.

-- Grateful Dead (Annelie’s welcome song)
